As I settle into the routines of work, ministry and life…I’m going to attempt to keep my blog updated…at least monthly, with thoughts and insights in my journeys through life. Enjoy this month’s post!
The Food Network has a show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” which causes me to stop and watch every time it’s on. Famous chefs share in delicious detail about some amazing meal or food they’ve eaten. It’s so enticing that you (or maybe it’s just me) want to find that place and try that particular food. The episode showcasing bacon is my personal favorite :-).
Since this is my birthday month, it got me to thinking….what have been my moments of “the best thing ever”? Since I’ve hit a couple of milestone birthdays, I can look back and see a life filled with lots of “best thing ever” moments….my career in education, hiking the Grand Canyon, running a half marathon, zip lining through the rain forest with my daughter in Costa Rica, Phoenix Comic-Con with my son, safari in Kenya. Lots of great memories and fun times!
Each birthday also reminds me that time goes by so quickly…..”yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. (James 4:14) and ultimately the “things” of this world are futile. As great as the memories are, I can also recall the many years I wasted in darkness and foolishness. I can recall my twenties/early thirties being a time of many unwise choices.
So, when I read the first two chapters of Ecclesiastes, I’m shown again and again that when I try to find my meaning, identity and security in the things of this world, I’m left with a meaningless life.
However, Ecclesiastes also shows me that the helpful companions on life’s journey: wisdom, friendship, good advice, timely actions….are only helpful when fear of God and obedience to His way of life becomes my primary purpose for living.
So, when I reflected on ” the best thing ever” in my life, it is and will always be my salvation through Jesus Christ. Knowing that I’m justified(Ephesians 2:8), redeemed (Ephesians 1:7), chosen by God (Ephesians 1:3-6), and set apart for His purposes(Ephesians 1:4)…give purpose, meaning, value and joy to my life. So my “best” is all about, glorifying His name and enjoying Him (1 Corinthians 10:31).
What about you? What is your “best thing ever”?
