Today was amazing! It was the first day of teaching 200 fourth-sixth graders about Christ. We began our day with a delicious breakfast of Thai fruit and cinnamon rolls and then headed out for a morning of teaching.
Our first day was focused on the story of creation. After being introduced to the children and teachers, Cheryl led all of us in a song with lots of actions to engage the children….which should have been our first sign of how much we would be sweating :). If had to rate this type of hot and humid weather, it would be a combination Florida in July and a hot yoga class. At any rate, the team continued on with our skit on the creation. As I narrated each day of creation, the rest of team presented the story to the enjoyment of the children. We then quickly transitioned to small group activites for the next couple of hours. Did I say how hot and humid it was? By the end of the first day, we were pretty unrecognizable :). Maybe there will be some before and after pictures tomorrow.
After lunch and an afternoon break, we returned to the school to meet with the teachers and help them improve their English. In small groups, we engaged them in conversational English while sharing portions of our faith. We’ve quickly made connections and new friends…also learned we have our own superhero among us…the principal kept referring to Don (one of our team members) as Superman :).
At any rate, we were very well received and complimented for how positive, kind and engaging we were with the children.
This opportunity to present and share the gospel in a Buddhist school setting still amazes me. Understanding how hard it is to be a Christian here, especially when the numbers are so minuscule and when everything centers around a Buddhist event…birth, weddings and even death… is something we can’t imagine in the States. However, I am comforted and find boldness to carry out this call because of the Word and all that the Lord promises no matter where I go.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)
Love and blessing…
